Makeup Tips for Wedding Day: Guest Post by Heather Wilson

Dear Brides,

It is a tremendous honor that I introduce you to the dynamic and beautiful Heather Wilson. The first time I met Heather I was surprised at how down to earth and approachable she is; Heather has the ability to make everyone feel special and valued no matter who you are in a crowded room. Even when I was new in the business, Heather was warm and caring and offered advice when I most needed it. There are times as a photographer we might need a makeup artist on location at the last minute. I’m honored that I have her to turn to in times of emergency…every time I’ve called on her, she’s always been there to help even if it’s to find someone else to fill in. She’s just a special diamond in our market and industry. Enjoy her guest post on Makeup Tips for Wedding Day and be sure to reach out to her–I know she’ll be there for you too, no matter what!

Your wedding day is the most photographed day of your life, and one of the most important!  So of course you want to look your absolute best!! After you have met the man of your dreams, gotten that ring on your finger, chosen the perfect dress, and the location is set, now what? You know you want to look amazing on your wedding day, but how do you start?

If at all possible- hire a professional. Research bridal makeup artists in your area, and find one that has been in the industry for a few years. This is your big day… don’t go cheap now!  The biggest difference with a professional makeup artist vs your friend is we are trained how to make you look your best on camera. We can contour, enhance, and do false lashes…. and you will feel and look like the best YOU, you can be!  We also use products that are only available to the professionals that will last you 10-14 hours or more, and are waterproof!! There is no crying or sweating off these products!

If a professional makeup artist is not in your budget, again do your research. Even if you never wear makeup.  Go to several makeup counters, and find someone who’s makeup you like.  Ask for a makeup lesson.  Yes- they will want you to buy something, but that is a cheap trade for a lesson on how to do your makeup.  You will have to go home and practice, practice, and more practice!! These may or may not be products you would use in your everyday life, but then again, this is not just any day in your life!!

When doing your own makeup on your wedding day, there are 4 things that you need to know:

1. Make sure that your sunscreen does not make you look white in flash pictures. Play with different sunscreens or moisturizers to make sure its not reflecting back and making you look pale in pictures.

2. The next thing is eye shadow. Yes- it will probably have to be darker than you are used to!!  Play to get a look that shows off your eyes, without seeing the makeup when you take pictures.

3. Don’t forget to use waterproof mascara and do two to three coats! You want to bring out your features, not have runny makeup from tears be what everyone notices!

4. Lips….. finding a perfect lipstick is the most personal thing.  The color you will feel most natural in, is one that is just a shade or two deeper or brighter, than your natural lip color. This is one of the few days that you will want to wear a long last lipstick or a stain.  You don’t want to be applying lipstick every hour, and you definitely don’t want to be constantly wiping it off your husband!

I have been a professional makeup artist for the last 20 years doing print, television, video and weddings. My job is to help you look like version 2.0 on your wedding day!!

I want your husband to look at you when you walk down that isle, to say that is the most beautiful you have ever looked and that YOU look amazing. My team and I will come to your location on your wedding day so everyone can enjoy the morning by not driving all over! All of the makeup artists on my team also do airbrush makeup, (as well as traditional) for a 10-14 hour wear as well as gives you coverage without looking or feeling like you have makeup on.

Best of luck and Congratulations!!!
